Host Question: What are some of the different jobs or career paths that someone could do in the nutrition field?
Answer: Even just as a dietitian, there are many areas that you can work in, can work clinically. So working in a hospital or a long term care facility, helping patients on the floor, you can work in an outpatient setting and work in community nutrition. So a lot of government funded programs such as work or SNAP, you can work in food service. So working in restaurants or catering companies, meal prep companies, you can work with media, which is something that I do a lot of now. So a lot of nutrition, communication, work, spreading the word about nutrition that is in the form of writing social media, working with local news TV segment. So there really are endless opportunities.
Answer: If you have just like a basic nutrition degree, you can follow up with that, go through your diet dietetics program, I guess, and become a registered dietitian. There are other things you can do that are kind of like a step down from dietetics, where you can be a diet tech, which means you can still work in hospitals and things like that, but you’re not a full on dietitian. You can also work in a lot of different industries just with a nutrition degree. You can be nutrition support, you can do nutrition management, have your own nutrition consulting business. I’d suggest getting dietitians in there as well. There’s so many things you can do with nutrition. And the best part about it, I think, is that you can always grow and you can always change it up too. It’s not like you have to stick to one thing the whole time.
Answer: I would say the most popular career with a nutrition degree is probably a dietitian that’s going to be more like a health care setting. You’re going to have to get a certification, do clinical hours, all sort of stuff like that. So that’s what I am. I’m a registered dietitian, so that’s probably one of the most popular one routes you can go. Another really popular route is some sort of food service, whether it’s like running a kitchen. There’s dietitians who like run big scale Kitchens, like in hospitals or in school settings. But again, those are also dietitians. Other than that, when it comes to nutrition, a lot of people do in the nutrition world kind of lean towards more like in gyms, being like personal trainers and then also working on like meal plans and diets with people as well. That can go really hand-in-hand pretty well as well.
