Host Question: What was the best part about your degree program or maybe a favorite class, perhaps your favorite element of your education?
Answer: I think learning nutrition is something that is so applicable to your life. And so you kind have things to like grab on to. So when you’re learning some of these classes, you’re like, “Oh yeah, I do feel better when I eat this that I really enjoyed.” If you go the nutrition dietetics route, you actually have to take cooking classes, which is so much fun. I still apply techniques and strategies that I learned in those cooking classes to when I like, cook myself dinner every night.
Answer: Definitely the experimental nutrition, I think it was called. It was taking our own blood work and doing all of our lab values, which was a super cool experience. And then we also learned how to interpret those lab values. So now if any of my family members or any of my clients get their blood work done and get their labs, I know exactly how to interpret it and what to do from there nutritionally. And it was really interesting to work in the lab, too. My favorite topic for certification wise is definitely nutrition counseling. I really enjoyed learning how to just interact with people better and deal with clients better. The science part of it is definitely important, but the actual real world face to face dealing with clients is just as important, if not more important.
Answer: The best part about my degree program was that it was so widespread. And I had so many opportunities to do so much. When I was in college, I worked for the housing and dining services dietitian, which is really cool. I got the opportunity to be her assistant, teach cooking classes and, you know, do so much interesting stuff there. While I also got to work in the bakery, I got to work on a research project. I got to join a cult like different clubs, agriculture clubs, things like that, which was really great. And I say the best thing you can do for yourself is just immerse yourself in so many different areas because there are so many areas in nutrition.
Answer: I have so many favorite classes. I loved a lot of them. We had a class devoted to nutrition communications. That was a lot of fun. I wish I had more classes in that area just because that’s what I love doing and spending the majority of my time doing now. There wasn’t a lot of explanation about this world, but I loved that. And I also really loved my medical nutrition therapy classes, even though I had no interest working clinically. Learning the disease states and learning the different treatments for all these different diseases was eye opening and really cool to see dietitians making an impact.
